    Dear Ames Families,

    At this time, students have completed their first high school midterm examination week and today marks the end of the second marking period.  When official grades are finalized later next week, we encourage students to sit with their parents to review information available in the PowerSchool portal and discuss their progress thus far in the school year. It is the perfect time for students to reflect and create goals for the spring.

    As a reminder, the grading breakdown for full year courses is as follows:

    Quarter 1 20%

    Quarter 2 20%

    Midterm 8%

    Quarter 3 20%

    Quarter 4 20%

    Final/Regents 12%

    Please note that we will still continue to exercise a variety of emergency management drills throughout the remainder of the school year.  Next week, we will be conducting a lockdown drill. A school lockdown is a procedure used when there is an immediate and imminent threat inside the school building. In the event of a lockdown, parents will not be able to sign-out children until the circumstances have been deemed safe. We continue to work in collaboration with our District Security team and Nassau County Police Department in an effort to support the safety of all students and staff in our school community.

    As we look ahead at the third marking period, we will continue to offer students with opportunities for social and emotional learning.  During the week of Monday, February 10th, students will be participating in the Signs of Suicide (SOS) workshop through each of their mathematics courses.  The program will be presented by Mrs. Kim Hession, our School Social Worker. Please feel free to reach out to the Pupil Personnel Office at (516) 308-5850 with any further questions about the SOS workshop.  At the conclusion of that week on Friday, February 14th, all students and staff are invited to wear purple in support of P.S.     Additionally, on Wednesday, February 26th at 11:00am, all parents, guardians and caretakers of students in grades 6-12 are invited to attend a virtual parent support session, Beyond the Silence: Strategies for Suicide Prevention, which is being delivered by our district social workers from Berner Middle School, MHS-Ames Campus and MHS-Main Campus.  On that specific day and time, the interactive session and discussion is accessible via Google Meet: JOIN HERE.

    Dear Ames Families,

    Good afternoon!  As noted on the school district calendar, the Ames Winter Music Concert is taking place at 8pm on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 in the Baldwin Auditorium at Massapequa High School (Main Campus). We respectfully request that those who attend the concert stay for the full duration of the performance. When people in the audience enter and leave, they disrupt the concert and others who are trying to enjoy their child’s performance. Our students have practiced since the beginning of the school year and look forward to showcasing their exemplary work. In this regard, they all deserve our full attention and respect. In addition, barring an unforeseen emergency, no performing student will be permitted to leave the concert early.  

    We appreciate your cooperation and your efforts to ensure a full audience for our students’ performances.

    Dear Ames Families,

    As a reminder, we are in the process of in-class midterms and regular full length midterm examinations are scheduled for next week beginning on Tuesday, January 21st.  Therefore, during the week of January 21st through January 24th, students will report to school for their scheduled exams only.  Please review the following important information:

    • Students are not permitted access to a cell phone and/or use earbuds during any testing session. Students are encouraged to leave phones at home if they are not necessary; otherwise, all electronic devices must be submitted to the proctor or school official prior to the examination.
    • In the event of school closure due to inclement weather, we will continue to follow the schedule as planned. 
    • Students are responsible to bring in pens, pencils, and calculators for their exams.
    • Students are expected to continue wearing their student IDs and lanyards throughout the midterm exam administration session.

    In addition, our Active Minds Club has been working on a Stress Less and Midterm Mindset campaign throughout the week, which includes an invitation to wear pajamas to school tomorrow, Friday, January 17th.  Furthermore, please note that schools will be closed on Monday, January 20th in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and on Wednesday, January 29th in celebration of the Lunar New Year.  Lastly, the second quarter marking period concludes on Friday, January 24th following midterms, and the third marking periods will begin on Monday, January 27th.

    Dear Ames Families,

    Happy New Year!  We hope that this email finds you well as we continue to move forward towards the end of the second marking period, which concludes on Friday, January 24th. Now that we have returned from winter recess, students will begin the process of planning their tenth-grade schedules for the 2025-2026 school year.  The Ames Guidance Counselors - Mrs. Balcuk, Ms. Levine, and Mrs. Mollura will be visiting all Social Studies classes next week to share information with students about the course selection process. Following these presentations, students will communicate with their teachers regarding course recommendations on Course Advisement Day, which will be held on Friday, January 10th.  Our Guidance Counselors will then begin meeting individually with each student to finalize their tenth-grade schedule.     Dear Ames Parents/Guardians,

    We are officially into the second marking period, and Thanksgiving is next week!  Students have been putting forth an outstanding effort in the areas of academics, athletics and clubs/activities at school.  In addition, students have already received their first marking period grades.  At the end of the  quarter, teachers provided comments on the Parent Portal about students' performance and/or areas of concern. After reviewing these grades and comments, students and parents are encouraged to speak directly with the appropriate classroom teacher and/or guidance counselor with any questions.

    As noted in the district calendar, on Tuesday, November 26th, students will be dismissed from 9th period class at approximately 2:03 PM to accommodate a 2:10 PM Rapid Dismissal Drill. No after-school clubs or extra-help will be in session, and there is no 3:10 PM late bus.  Sports schedules will remain in place at the discretion of the athletic coaches so shuttle buses will be available to transport athletes to MHS-Main Campus. School will then be closed from Wednesday, November 27th through Friday, November 29th for the Thanksgiving holiday.

    Upon our return to school on Monday, December 2nd, the first of two trips to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum will take place (with the second group visiting on Monday, December 9th).  In addition, on the morning of Wednesday, December 4th, we will be holding an assembly program for students about the dangers of fentanyl presented by the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD).

    Dear Ames Families,
    We are excited to inform you about a field trip opportunity the English Department is organizing for our students to visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City.
    This year, the English classes read Ground Zero by Alan Gratz. This powerful novel allowed students to explore the impact of that historic day, helping them to understand the importance of resilience and compassion on an individual and global level. The field trip to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum connects what students read to real-life experiences, enhancing their understanding of history, empathy, and the significance of remembrance. Permission slips go home on Thursday!

    Dear Ames Families,

    This week, students participated in a workshop on the topic of Vaping & Making Healthy Decisions in the Social Studies classes.  The program was presented by the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD).  Throughout the presentation, the speaker engaged students in the following points of discussion:

    • Development of the frontal cortex and decision making
    • Examples of healthy habits
    • How addiction begins
    • Dangers and risks of vaping with a focus on nicotine, marijuana and toxic chemicals
    • Navigating peer pressure
    • Coping with stress through the examples of self-expression, confiding in others, mindfulness and physical wellness
    • Reflecting on how our decisions align with our values

    Tomorrow, on Thursday, October 24th, all students and staff are invited to wear red in support of Red Ribbon Week.  Red Ribbon Week is a time that recognizes and supports the fight against drugs and addiction as well as those who have been impacted by substance abuse.

    Next week, on the morning of Monday, October 28th (Day 2) at approximately 7:35am, we will be evacuating the school building to conduct a Shelter-Relocation Drill. Specifically, all Ames Campus students and staff will walk and be temporarily relocated to Lockhart Elementary School.  Once attendance is taken at Lockhart Elementary School, students and staff will promptly return to Ames and proceed with the regular instructional school day.  

    In addition, students may wear costumes to school for Halloween on Thursday, October 31st.  However, please be mindful of the following guidelines:

    • Students may choose to dress “in costume” if the costume is suitable and appropriate in an educational atmosphere as determined by the staff.  Costumes that represent violence or are distasteful/disrespectful are not welcome or acceptable.
    • Students are not allowed to carry props. Props include sticks, brooms, weapons, canes, or any item that may be considered by staff to be inappropriate, dangerous, or cumbersome.
    • Halloween costume masks/face paint/make-up (that cover the entire face) are not permitted; the identity of any student may not be disguised.
    • October 31st is a regular instructional day and students are expected to be able to perform all of their assigned tasks while in costume.
    • Any students whose costume is disrupting the educational process or deemed inappropriate by staff will be asked to remove the costume.

    Dear Ames Families,

    Earlier this week, our students were presented with an opportunity for increased awareness regarding an overview of emergency care during their designated Physical Education class.  As noted previously, the presentation did not provide students with a certification; however, it was intended to inform them of helpful information pertaining to First Aid, performing CPR, using AEDs, responding to choking as well as how to stop the bleed. Students were highly attentive and engaged throughout the program presented by staff from Covert Investigations, our district security organization. 

    Looking ahead at next week, schools are closed for Columbus Day on Monday, October 14th.  When we return on Tuesday, October 15th we begin Spirit Week!  Each of the high school classes have chosen the theme of 80’s movies and will be decorating halls and their parade banners with their chosen movie. Our 9th grade Class of 2028 has chosen Back to the Future.  Also, students and staff are invited to participate in dressing for school each day of Spirit Week according to the following themes:

    • Wednesday - Unity Day (all students and staff invited to wear orange)

    Dear Ames Families,

    Last week, students participated in a workshop on the topic of Social Media, Digital Safety, & Connections with Others in the English Language Arts classes.  The program was presented by the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD).  Throughout the presentation, the speaker engaged students in the following points of discussion:

    • Ways in which social media impacts mental health
    • Making good decisions when using social media
    • Understanding our digital footprint
    • Cyberbullying and the impact our words can have on others
    • Staying safe in a digital space
    • Being an advocate for others, practicing empathy, being respectful and considering ones values

    Please note that a representative from LICADD will be returning to Ames on Monday, October 21st and Tuesday, October 22nd to connect with students on the topic of vaping and addiction.  The presentations will be delivered in the Social Studies classes. 

    Today, a representative from the Nassau County Police Department’s Explorers Program will be onsite and available during the lunch periods to provide program information to any interested students.  In addition, our first Shared Decision Making (SDM) Committee is scheduled to meet at 2:30 pm in Room 133.

    Dear Field Hockey Families,

    Starting on Monday, September 23, 2024, the 3:10 North late bus from Ames, will now be stopping at Field of Dreams at approximately 3:40 pm everyday. This will provide our athletes an opportunity to attend extra help during 10th period at Ames, and will ensure them a means of transportation to the field if they do not utilize the earlier shuttle bus to MHS - Main Campus.

    Dear Ames Families,

    Last week, our students did an excellent job practicing a series of emergency management drills, which included a bus evacuation, fire drill, lockdown drill and lockout drill.  We will continue to exercise a variety of these drills throughout the school year.

    This week, we begin offering students the Learn at Lunch program in the academic areas of Mathematics and Science.  Students are able to access additional support during their lunch periods as follows:

    • Mathematics with Ms. Reilly: Tuesday - Friday in Room 229 (Periods 4&5) and 220 (Periods 6&7)
    • Science with Ms. Whalen: Tuesday - Thursday in Room 136

    In looking ahead to next week, on Thursday, September 26th and Friday, September 27th, Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be presenting a workshop to students on the topic of Social Media, Digital Safety, & Connections with Others in the English Language Arts classes. 

    Furthermore, on Monday, September 30th, the Ames site-based Shared Decision Making (SDM) Committee is scheduled to hold its first meeting of the 2024-2025 school year at 2:30 p.m. in Room 133.  This site-based forum allows faculty and staff, students, parents and administrators to come together once a month in order to discuss ideas and practices in order to make recommendations that will positively impact our school.  At this time, we are looking for some interest from parents/guardians in joining the committee.  The meetings are anticipated to conclude before the 3:10pm late bus dismissal for students, but can be adjusted as needs and time permit.  Please respond to dkennedy@msd.k12.ny.us by the end of the day on Thursday, 9/27 if you would like to join us as a member for this year.

    As a reminder, Picture Day at Ames will be held on Monday, September 16th (Day 1) and Tuesday, September 17th (Day 2).  All students are invited to have their freshman class portraits taken in the Small Gym during their Physical Education classes. A make-up session has been scheduled for Monday, October 21st outside the cafeteria during all lunch periods.  Please note that students will be photographed against a green screen in order to offer a variety of background choices. For best results, it is recommended that students avoid wearing complicated patterns or shades of green.

    Dear Ames Families,

    It’s been a short first week of the 2024-2025 school year, but it has been such a pleasure for all of us at Ames to connect with the incoming freshman class!  Students are doing an excellent job thus far working to acclimate to the Ames Campus.   

    Today we held a “Welcome Back” Student Assembly followed by a modified bell schedule.  During the presentation, we discussed the following topics:

    • The Importance of Ninth Grade, including increased expectations, rigor and responsibility
    • A High School Transcript, including career and college planning 
    • Student Support Services, including our Guidance Counselors, Social Worker and Psychologist
    • Stepping Out of Our Comfort Zone, including joining sports, clubs, participating in activities and making new friendships

    Students were presented with a lot of information, tools, and guidance to assist them with a solid start to ninth grade.  At the same time, we emphasized the importance of striving for progress, not perfection and getting better each day.  It is our hope that together we can make this an exceptional year!

    In looking ahead at next week, we would like to share the following additional information with you regarding safety and emergency management:

    Beginning and during the week of Monday, September 9th we plan to exercise a series of mandatory emergency management drills that will include practicing a fire/evacuation drill, lockdown drill, lockout drill as well as a bus evacuation drill during morning arrival.  These initial drills are announced, and will include specific guidelines and procedures shared through our public address (PA) system in advance.  Notification of drills will also be received via Informacast.

    As a reminder, school lockout is a procedure used when there is an incident outside the school building.  During a lockout, each entrance will be locked, and no one will be permitted to enter or exit the building. A school lockdown is a procedure used when there is an immediate and imminent threat inside the school building. Once a lockdown is declared, building activities cease and students and staff are secured in locked rooms while being out of view as much as possible. No one will be permitted to enter or leave the building. In the event of either a lockout or lockdown, parents will not be able to sign-out children until the circumstances have been deemed safe. Please know that we continue to work in collaboration with our District Security and Nassau County Police Department in an effort to support the safety of all students and staff in our school community.

    Dear Ames Students and Families,

    It was wonderful meeting so many of our incoming 9th graders during the Student Orientation and Walkthrough last week on Wednesday, August 28th. We began the orientation session in our cafetorium and introduced our building leadership team as well as faculty and staff who were present to support the orientation sessions.  During the presentation, we discussed the following topics with our students:

    Dear Ames Families,

    This week includes our last day of classes on Thursday, June 13th! Please read the information below regarding locker cleanout, final/Regents exams, as well as absence and cell phone policy reminders during the exam period.

    Locker Cleanout

    Locker cleanout will occur this week on Tuesday, June 11th (2nd Floor) and Wednesday, June 12th (1st Floor). Students should bring all personal items home. All lockers must be emptied by the end of the school day on Thursday, June 13th, and students will not have access to their lockers beyond Thursday.  In addition, students are to retain their locks for use at MHS-Main Campus in the next academic school year.

    Finals/Regents Exams

    Please review the Final Exam/Regents schedule and the transportation schedule.  If you or your child has any further questions, please encourage them to visit the Guidance Office.

    • As a reminder, final exams and Regents Exams constitute 12% of a student’s grade in the course.  Students should fully prepare for these assessments to the greatest extent possible. There are still opportunities to attend Learn at Lunch this week as well as extra-help in the final days of school.
    • Beginning on Friday, June 14, 2024 students will report to school only if they have a scheduled final or Regents examination.  
    • Any illness-related absence June 4 - June 24 must be verified with a note from a physician. Students who are illegally absent will receive a grade of zero.
    • Students are prohibited from having possession of electronic devices including, but not limited to: a cell phone, iPod, MPS Player, iPad, camera, headphones, smartwatch, and AirPods while in a testing room and/or during a testing administration. Students who bring devices with them to a test must provide those devices to the testing proctor. 

    Throughout the course of the school year, students have worked diligently to build a strong foundation for tenth grade and beyond. We encourage all students to continue doing as best as they can in preparation for finals and Regents examinations.

    Dear Ames Families,

    Good afternoon!  As noted on the school district calendar, the Ames Spring Music Concert is taking place at 8pm on Monday, June 10, 2024 in the Baldwin Auditorium at Massapequa High School (Main Campus). 

    We respectfully request that those who attend the concert stay for the full duration of the performance. When people in the audience enter and leave, they disrupt the concert and others who are trying to enjoy their child’s performance. Our students have practiced since the beginning of the school year and look forward to showcasing their exemplary work. In this regard, they all deserve our full attention and respect. In addition, barring an unforeseen emergency, no performing student will be permitted to leave the concert early.  We appreciate your cooperation and your efforts to ensure a full audience for our students’ performances.

    As a reminder, tomorrow, on Tuesday, June 4th, only students taking the Algebra I Regents Exam will be attending school at Ames.  Students enrolled in Geometry or Geometry Accelerated will not be reporting to school.  Although Ames will be operating as an exam day only, Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School will be operating in accordance with an instructional school day - Day 1.  As a result, on Wednesday, June 5th we will all be following a Day 2 schedule.

    In looking ahead, please note that we have two wonderful opportunities to support our 9th grade students involved in the fine and performing arts.  On Tuesday, May 28th, the Art Exhibit will be held in the Ames Library at 7pm.  In addition, the Spring Music Concert for students enrolled in Band, Chorus and Orchestra will be held on Monday, June 10th at MHS-Main Campus at 8pm.  We look forward to seeing you at these events and celebrating our students involved in the arts.

     Students should be dropped off in the parking lot on the east side of the building at 5 am. The Baltimore Avenue entrance will not be open. 

    • Pittsburgh Avenue must be kept clear for the buses both in the morning and the evening. 
    • At pickup, parents may use the parking lot, Parkside or Baltimore Avenue for parking. 
    • The anticipated return is at 8:30 pm.

    Dear Ames Families,

    The fourth marking period has been bustling with activity.  Last week, Ames held a 9th grade student assembly in which we reflected on the school year, highlighted mental health awareness month, shared tips to support good study skills, and also reviewed the code of conduct.  Students also had an opportunity to meet and hear from Ms. Barbara Lowell, Principal at MHS-Main Campus, about the transition to 10th grade, expectations, pathways and earning a diploma.

    As of this week, students are taking AP Exams, continuing to go on field trips, participating in clubs and athletics, and preparing diligently for the final exam session by attending extra-help and Regents Review Sessions (Ames Campus Regents Review Sessions - 2024).  The mid-quarter on Thursday, May 23rd is only two weeks away. 

    In looking ahead to next week, please note that on Monday, May 13th, the NYS Field Tests will be administered during regular class time to students in Biology/Living Environment classes.  We are also excited to share that ALS Ride for Life will be back at Ames again this year!  On Tuesday, May 14th at approximately 11:45am, we will step outside the building along the semicircle of the Baltimore Avenue entrance to greet, cheer and encourage all the riders and walkers.  As in years prior, our student government organization will be presenting a donation through fundraising efforts.

    As a reminder, Friday, May 24th is a make-up day, and school will be in session.  However, school will be closed on Monday, May 27th for Memorial Day.  Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation as we continue to work towards a strong and successful 9th grade year at the Ames Campus.

    Dear AP Computer Science Principles Students and Parents/Guardians:

    Over the last couple of months, students, parents, and teachers have been working very hard in preparation of the upcoming AP exams. We would like to address a couple of important details surrounding the administration of the exams. Please see the schedule below for the specific testing details: 

    UCP

    On the day of the exam, it will be a regular school day at Ames. For attendance purposes, students will be coded “Testing” for the day, and they are not required to attend any of their regularly scheduled classes prior to the exam.  If parents/guardians are unable to provide transportation to the building, students are advised to utilize the regular morning school transportation, and they will attend Study Hall until it's time for them to report to their testing room. In addition, we will arrange for them to have lunch prior to the exam. All other students must report to school no later than 11:15 am, and once they are signed into school, they will head immediately to their testing room. 

    At the conclusion of the exam, students are able to use our 3:10 pm late buses, which only makes area stops.

    If testing accommodations were approved for a student by College Board, they are able to continue working on their exam until approximately 4:30 pm. In the event a student finishes earlier, they are able to leave at the regular exam end time.  

     Important Reminders on the Day of Testing

    • Students are strongly encouraged to make sure that they get to bed early the night prior to the exam, and eat before arriving at school.
    • Eating and drinking are prohibited in the testing room.
    • Proctors will be collecting all electronic devices and air pods prior to the exam. Electronic equipment (cell phone, smart phone, smart watch, laptop, tablet computer, wearable technology, etc.) portable listening or recording devices (MP3 player, iPod, etc), cameras or other photographic equipment, devices that can access the internet, and any other electronic or communication devices are prohibited during testing or during breaks. According to AP College Board testing guidelines, any student observed with any of these devices during testing or breaks may be dismissed from the exam, the device will be confiscated, the student's score may be canceled, and no retest may be permitted.

    Dear AP Human Geography Students and Parents/Guardians:

    Over the last couple of months, students, parents, and teachers have been working very hard in preparation of the upcoming AP exams. We would like to address a couple of important details surrounding the administration of the exams.

    On the day of the exam, it will be a regular school day at Ames. For attendance purposes, students will be coded “Testing” for the day, and they are not required to attend any of their regularly scheduled classes after the exam.  Students must report immediately to their testing room once they enter the building. 

    If a student is leaving school at the conclusion of the exam, a parent/guardian will need to send in a note to the Dean’s Office no later than Monday, May 6th, indicating that intention and identifying who will be picking them up. Please note that if the person picking up a student is not listed as an emergency contact for them, you will need to state in your letter that you are giving them permission to do so. If a student is a walker or rides their bike to school, please indicate that in the letter as well. When a parent/guardian arrives to pick up a student, we will need to confirm the identity of who the student is being released to. Although the exam is expected to end at 10:15, there is a process that needs to be followed with respect to the collection of the testing materials and the release of students. Therefore, please anticipate that students may not be able to leave until around 10:45, and we thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation with this process. 

    For students who will be following their normal schedule at the conclusion of the exam, we will make arrangements for them to have lunch, if they already missed their lunch period for the day.

    Dear Ames Students and Parents/Guardians,

    Yesterday, Ames hosted the 17th annual Alumni Career Day with great success!  Students were given the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers and experiences from former graduates.  Following each of the panel discussions, students were able to ask questions, which demonstrated their interest, curiosity and high level of engagement.  We invite our students to continue the dialogue with their families.

    At the end of the school day, students will begin their spring recess and schools will be closed from Monday, April 22nd - Tuesday, April 30th, which includes the Passover holiday.  Hopefully you will all be able to rest, relax and make the most of the break with family and friends.

    After we return from the spring recess,  we begin our series of Regents Review Sessions in the areas of Mathematics (Algebra I, Geometry) and Science (Living Environment/Biology, Earth Science).  The sessions are held after the instructional school day during 10th period. Please note that these review sessions are being offered in addition to other support such as Extra-help and Learn at Lunch.     On Thursday, April 18th, we look forward to welcoming Massapequa School District alumni at our annual Alumni Career Day.  The students will be following an adjusted bell schedule to support the panel discussions for the program that day:  Alumni Career Day Bell Schedule.  Students will be afforded a wonderful opportunity to learn about a variety of careers and experiences from former graduates.  As a follow up, we invite parents to discuss this event with their child to see what reflections and acquired insights the students may have from the program.

    As noted on the district calendar, students will be on spring recess from Monday, April 22nd - Tuesday, April 30th, which includes the Passover holiday.   The students have earned this time to relax, refresh, spend time with family, socialize, and/or travel.  When we return from the break, we will be holding a 9th grade student assembly on Thursday, May 2nd in which we will be reflecting on the year, highlighting mental health awareness month, sharing tips to support good study skills, in addition to reviewing the code of conduct and the transition to 10th grade at the main campus of Massapequa High School.

    As you have most likely heard, a member of our Massapequa community and an officer for the NYPD, Jonathan Diller, was killed in the line of duty yesterday. Our hearts ache for Officer Diller's family, friends, and the entire NYPD community as they mourn this devastating loss.

    Hopefully this email finds you well as we continue to move forward and jump into the spring season. As we have seen throughout the year, students remain dedicated to and involved in a variety of engaging and exciting activities.  We continue to be proud of their efforts and achievements across all areas within and beyond the school day.

    Tomorrow, on Thursday, March 21st, we encourage our school community to support World Down Syndrome Day and to “Rock Your Socks!”.  In addition, beginning on April 2nd and then all Fridays throughout the month of April, we invite everyone to wear blue for World Autism Acceptance and Disability Awareness Month. 

    Next week, beginning Monday, March 25th through Tuesday, April 2nd school guidance counselors will begin visiting English Language Arts (ELA) classes to give students an overview of Naviance, an online tool that helps students align their strengths and interests to postsecondary goals:  Letter to Parents from Ames Campus Guidance Department.     Dear Ames Families,

    As you may have heard or seen upon entry to the school building along Baltimore Avenue on Monday, the basement of the boiler room was flooded with water due to a pipe leak in the boiler room. Despite this setback, I am pleased to share that our incredible building custodial team, in collaboration with our district buildings and grounds team, swiftly responded to the situation and have been tirelessly working to address it.

    As of Monday morning, the water was successfully expelled, and measures such as HEPA grade air scrubbers and fans, along with commercial dehumidifiers, were immediately implemented to mitigate moisture and ensure the safety of our environment.

    Due to the amount of water that accumulated in the basement, however, the boilers are no longer operable and can no longer provide heat to the building. In addition, the flooding impacted the operation of the hot water tank. Therefore, warm water may not be available when using the faucets. Please know that we do have a secondary heat supply through the split units in the classrooms, which are supported with electrical heat pumps. We are closely monitoring the building's temperature and will make any necessary adjustments to ensure everyone's comfort to the best of our ability.

    Thank you for your patience as we navigate the repairs and replacements of operational equipment with district administration. If you should have further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.

    Dear Ames Families,

    At this time, the midterms are behind us and the new semester began earlier this week.  Beginning today, Thursday, February 1st, you are able to review the second quarter and midterm examination grades available on the Parent Portal. We encourage students to sit with their parents to review their progress thus far in the school year. It is the perfect time for students to reflect and create goals for the spring.

    Dear Ames Families,

    Good afternoon!  As noted on the school district calendar, the Ames Winter Music Concert is taking place at 8pm on Wednesday, January 17th, 2024 in the Baldwin Auditorium at Massapequa High School (Main Campus). 

    We respectfully request that those who attend the concert stay for the full duration of the performance. When people in the audience enter and leave, they disrupt the concert and others who are trying to enjoy their child’s performance. Our students have practiced since the beginning of the school year and look forward to showcasing their exemplary work. In this regard, they all deserve our full attention and respect. In addition, barring an unforeseen emergency, no performing student will be permitted to leave the concert early.  We appreciate your cooperation and your efforts to ensure a full audience for our students’ performances.

    We hope that this email finds you well as we continue to move forward towards the end of the first semester, which concludes on Friday, January 26th.  Next week, schools are closed on Monday, January 15th for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  In addition, please review the following reminders pertaining to midterm examinations.

    • In-Class Midterms: In-class midterms are scheduled for Tuesday, January 16th through Monday, January 22nd.  These exams occur in-class during regular school days. 
    • Midterms: Regular full-length midterm examinations are scheduled for Tuesday, January 23rd - Friday, January 26th. Students will report to school for their scheduled exams only.
    • Students are not permitted access to a cell phone and/or use earbuds during any testing session. Students are encouraged to leave phones at home if they are not necessary; otherwise, all electronic devices must be submitted to the proctor or school official.
    • In the event of school closure due to inclement weather, we will continue to follow the schedule as planned.

    As you are aware, the Nassau County Police Department presented a program during this morning’s student assembly regarding awareness and the dangers of fentanyl.  As a follow up to the student assembly program, we invite and encourage you to watch the following video with your child:

    The video is approximately 20 minutes in length. Please note that this video was not included in today’s presentation, but students were informed that this video will serve as an opportunity to follow up with you as their parents/guardians to further the important dialogue about today’s program.

    We would also like to share that the Fentanyl Awareness Student Assembly that had been previously canceled is rescheduled for Wednesday, January 3, 2024. The assemblies will be held in the morning, and the school day will follow an adjusted bell schedule for all class periods.

    Dear Ames Parents/Guardians,

    We are officially into the second marking period, and Thanksgiving is this week!  Students have been putting forth an outstanding effort in the areas of academics, athletics and clubs/activities at school.  In addition, students have already received their first marking period grades.  At the end of the  quarter, teachers provided comments on the Parent Portal about students' performance and/or areas of concern. After reviewing these grades and comments, students and parents are encouraged to speak directly with the appropriate classroom teacher and/or guidance counselor with any questions.

    Last week, students were provided with an overview of emergency care, which included information as it pertains to CPR, AED, choking as well as Stop-the-Bleed.  The program was presented by staff from Covert Investigations, our district security organization.  We have received positive feedback from students about how helpful the presentations were in raising their awareness to emergency circumstances.

    Today in all science classes, students explored the science and benefits behind having an Attitude of Gratitude. Students were informed about the ways in which neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin) and hormones (cortisol) are impacted through thoughts and actions of gratitude, which in turn, may help:

    • reduce stress and increase happiness
    • enhance relationships and social connections
    • promote better health and reduce inflammation

    During the lesson, students had an opportunity to collaborate with their peers and practice gratitude by noting things in their own lives that they are grateful for.   

    As a reminder, on Tuesday, November 21st, students will be dismissed from 9th period class at approximately 2:03 PM to accommodate a 2:10 PM Rapid Dismissal Drill. No after-school clubs or extra-help will be in session, and there is no 3:10 PM late bus.  Sports schedules will remain in place at the discretion of the athletic coaches so shuttle buses will be available to transport athletes to MHS-Main Campus. School will then be closed from Wednesday, November 22nd through Friday, November 24th for the Thanksgiving holiday.

    Dear Ames Families,

    We are reaching out to share some important reminders and information about this week and in the weeks ahead throughout November. Specific to this week:

    • School is closed for students tomorrow, Tuesday, November 7th, during Election Day. 
    • On Wednesday, 11/8 (Day 2) and Thursday, 11/9 (Day 1) all students will be receiving an overview of emergency care during their designated Physical Education class.  The presentation does not provide students with a certification; however, it is intended to inform them of helpful information as it pertains to CPR, AED, choking as well as stop the bleed. The program will be presented by staff from Covert Investigations, our district security organization.
    • Thursday, 11/9 marks the end of the first marking period of the academic year.  Please note, however, that teachers will continue to assess student work and make updates to the grades in the PowerSchool portal over the following several days.  Final grades for the first marking period will be posted by Thursday, November 16th.
    • School is closed Friday, November 10th in observance of Veteran’s Day.  
    • Wednesday, 11/15 and Thursday, 11/16,  students will be given the opportunity to have yearbook photos taken with their respective clubs at Ames in the Small Gym.  Club advisors will be notifying students with regard to their assigned photo day.

    Looking ahead, on the morning of Thursday, November 16th(Day 1) at approximately 7:35am, there will be a Shelter-Relocation Drill. Specifically, all Ames Campus students and staff will be temporarily relocated to Lockhart Elementary School until the drill has concluded. Once attendance is taken at Lockhart, students and staff will promptly return to Ames and proceed with the regular instructional school day.  

    Furthermore, we will continue to support social and emotional learning opportunities and experiences for students.  Together with the teachers of science courses, we are excited to share that our Guidance, PPS, and Administrative teams will be working with students in the classrooms on Monday, November 20th, in an effort to explore the science behind an Attitude of Gratitude.  If you have any questions regarding the lesson program, then please contact your child’s guidance counselor at (516) 308-5830.

    Dear Ames Students and Parent/ Guardians,

    As a reminder, students who ride the bus to and from school, take the shuttle bus from Ames to MHS - Main Campus or as a part of any school sponsored activity are to adhere to the Massapequa School District’s Code of Conduct.

    It is crucial for students to behave appropriately while riding on district buses, to ensure their safety and that of other passengers, and to avoid distracting the bus driver. Students are required to conduct themselves on the bus and at bus stops in a manner consistent with established standards for classroom behavior, and in accordance with the Code of Conduct. For example, throwing objects in or out of the bus, bullying, harassment, intimidation, excessive noise, videotaping and/or picture taking, shoving, fighting or using profane language or gestures will not be tolerated. Students must remain seated at all times while the bus is moving.

    Concerns regarding student conduct have been brought to our attention by our students, parents, staff and bus drivers. Please know that we investigate reports, with information gathered from student accounts and video camera footage from bus rides, and address them accordingly. In an effort to maintain a safe educational experience, it is important to note that students who do not comply with the district’s Code of Conduct may have their bus privileges suspended, in addition to any other school determined consequence as appropriate such as detention, in-school suspension (ISS) and being suspended from attending school (OSS). 

    We are emphasizing the importance of complying with the Code of Conduct, respecting one another, and most importantly, working towards ensuring the safety of all. We appreciate your support, and thank you for your attention to this important matter.

    Dear Ames Families,

    As a reminder, students may wear costumes to school for Halloween on Tuesday, October 31st.  However, please be mindful of the following guidelines:

    • Students may choose to dress “in costume” if the costume is suitable and appropriate in an educational atmosphere as determined by the staff.  Costumes that represent violence or are distasteful/disrespectful are not welcome or acceptable.
    • Students are not allowed to carry props. Props include sticks, brooms, weapons, canes, or any item that may be considered by staff to be inappropriate, dangerous, or cumbersome.
    • Halloween costume masks/face paint/make-up (that cover the entire face) are not permitted; the identity of any student may not be disguised.
    • October 31st is a regular instructional day and students are expected to be able to perform all of their assigned tasks while in costume.
    • Any students whose costume is disrupting the educational process or deemed inappropriate by staff will be asked to remove the costume.
    • If you have any questions regarding costumes, please feel free to call the Office of the Executive Assistant Principal at 308-5885.

    Please be advised that the fire alarm at Ames went off this morning due to smoke from burned toast.  We evacuated the building and remained outside for approximately 15 minutes until the smoke cleared.  All students and staff were able to safely return to the building and resume the course of the school day.

    Dear Ames Families,

    Halloween is on Tuesday, October 31st, and students may wear costumes to school.  However, please be mindful of the following guidelines:

    • Students may choose to dress “in costume” if the costume is suitable and appropriate in an educational atmosphere as determined by the staff.  Costumes that represent violence or are distasteful/disrespectful are not welcome or acceptable.
    • Students are not allowed to carry props. Props include sticks, brooms, weapons, canes, or any item that may be considered by staff to be inappropriate, dangerous, or cumbersome.
    • Halloween costume masks/face paint/make-up (that cover the entire face) are not permitted; the identity of any student may not be disguised.
    • October 31st is a regular instructional day and students are expected to be able to perform all of their assigned tasks while in costume.
    • Any students whose costume is disrupting the educational process or deemed inappropriate by staff will be asked to remove the costume.
    • If you have any questions regarding costumes, please feel free to call the Office of the Executive Assistant Principal at 308-5885.

    Dear Ames Families,

    This week, students participated in a workshop on the topic of Vaping, Addiction & Healthy Decisions in the Physical Education classes.  The program was presented by the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD).  Throughout the presentation, the speaker engaged students in the following points of discussion:

    • Development of the frontal cortex and decision making
    • Examples of healthy habits
    • How addiction begins
    • Dangers and risks of vaping with a focus on nicotine, marijuana and toxic chemicals
    • Navigating peer pressure
    • Coping with stress through the examples of self-expression, confiding in others, mindfulness and physical wellness
    • Reflecting on how our decisions align with our values

    As a reminder, on Monday, October 23rd, Island Photography will be here outside of the cafeteria during all lunch periods for a make-up session or a retake. Please note that students will be photographed against a green screen in order to offer a variety of background choices.  For best results, it is recommended that students avoid wearing complicated patterns or shades of green.

    Dear Ames Families,

    Students and staff throughout these past days had fun dressing up in a variety of themes to celebrate Spirit Week, which culminates tomorrow, Saturday, October 14th with the Homecoming parade and football game.  The parade will begin from the Village of Massapequa Park Municipal Parking Lot at 1:30pm and conclude at Massapequa High School.  Kickoff time for the football game is at 3:00pm. 

    In looking ahead at next week:

    • Breast Cancer Awareness beginning the week of Monday, October 16th
      • Stickers will be sold for $1.00 during all lunch periods throughout the week. All proceeds will go towards the Suzanne M. Scanio Foundation . 
      • Thursday, October 19th, all students and staff are invited to wear pink.

    Dear Ames Families,

    We have completed our first week in the month of October and today marks the first mid-quarter appraisal of the academic school year.  Students have an opportunity to attend Extra-Help after school throughout the week: Extra-Help Schedule.  Furthermore, we also offer a Learn at Lunch program in the academic areas of mathematics and science.  Students are able to access support during their lunch (periods 4-7) as follows:

    • Mathematics with Ms. Harrington: Tuesday - Friday in Room 233 (Periods 4&5) and 237 (Periods 6&7)
    • Science with Ms. Whalen: Wednesday - Thursday in Room 136

    Now that we are a few weeks into the school year, we would like to remind students that they are required to wear their grade-level specific lanyard with their student-issued identification card attached as per the Massapequa School District’s Code of Conduct.   Please note that disciplinary consequences can result if students are not in compliance. Should a student need a temporary student ID for the day, then they are to report to the Administrative Assistant Office.  Any student needing a replacement student ID, however, should visit the Attendance Office.  As we shared prior to the start of the school year, there is a $5 replacement fee for student IDs.   

    In addition, we would appreciate support with building release protocols as it pertains to students and health related issues that may arise during the school day.  If a student does not feel well while in school, it is important for the student to report to the Health Office and visit with our school nurse, Ms. Nolan, who can assess the student and communicate with parents/guardians accordingly.

    • Understanding our digital footprint

    Please note that a representative from LICADD will be returning to Ames on Tuesday, October 17th and Wednesday, October 18th to connect with students on the topic of vaping and addiction.  The presentations will be delivered in the Physical Education classes. 

    In looking ahead to next week, our first Shared Decision Making (SDM) Committee is scheduled to meet on Monday, October 2nd at 2:30 pm in Room 133.     Dear Ames Families,

    As we approach the upcoming long weekend, we want to reach out about next week at Ames.  School is closed on Monday, September 25th for Yom Kippur.  On Wednesday, September 27th and Thursday, September 28th, Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be presenting a workshop to students on the topic of Social Media, Digital Safety, & Connections with Others in the English Language Arts classes. In addition, a representative from the Nassau County Police Department’s Explorers Program will be onsite and available during the lunch periods on September 28th to provide program information to any interested students.  

    The following week on Monday, October 2nd, the Ames site-based Shared Decision Making (SDM) Committee is scheduled to hold its first meeting of the 2023-2024 school year at 2:30 p.m. in Room 133.  This site-based forum allows faculty and staff, students, parents and administrators to come together once a month in order to discuss ideas and practices in order to make recommendations that will positively impact our school.  At this time, we are looking for some interest from parents/guardians in joining the committee.  The meetings are anticipated to conclude before the 3:10pm late bus dismissal for students, but can be adjusted as needs and time permit.  Please respond to dkennedy@msd.k12.ny.us by the end of the day on Friday, 9/29 if you would like to join us as a member for this year.

    For our students, Picture Day for student portraits will be held on Wednesday, September 20th (Day 2) and Thursday, September 21st (Day 1).  All students are invited to have their freshman class portraits taken in the Small Gym during their Physical Education classes.     Lastly, our students did an excellent job last week practicing a series of emergency management drills, which included a bus evacuation, fire drill, lockdown drill and lockout drill.  We will continue to exercise a variety of these drills throughout the school year.

    It’s been a short first week of the 2023-2024 school year, but it has been such a pleasure for all of us at Ames to connect with the incoming freshman class!  Students are doing an excellent job thus far working to acclimate to the Ames Campus.   

    Today we held a “Welcome Back” Student Assembly followed by a modified bell schedule.  During the presentation, we discussed the following topics:

    Students were presented with a lot of information, tools, and guidance to assist them with a solid start to ninth grade.  At the same time, we emphasized the importance of striving for progress, not perfection... getting better each day.  It is our hope that together we can make this an exceptional year!

    In looking ahead at next week, we would like to share the following additional information with you:

    • Commemoration of September 11th, a Day of Remembrance - A moment of silence will be held during homeroom.  Students and staff are invited to dress in patriotic colors of red, white and blue.  This symbolic gesture will honor those Americans who gave so much on September 11, 2001, and the days, months, and years that followed. Teachers in social studies classes will be recognizing 9/11 as part of their instruction. 
    • Emergency Management Drills
      • Beginning Tuesday, September 12th we plan to exercise a series of mandatory emergency management drills that will include practicing a bus evacuation drill during morning arrival, fire drill, lockdown drill and lockout drill.  These initial drills are announced, and will include specific guidelines and procedures shared through our public address (PA) system in advance.
        • As a reminder, school lockout is a procedure used when there is an incident outside the school building.  During a lockout, each entrance will be locked, and no one will be permitted to enter or exit the building. A school lockdown is a procedure used when there is an immediate and imminent threat inside the school building. Once a lockdown is declared, building activities cease and students and staff are secured in locked rooms while being out of view as much as possible. No one will be permitted to enter or leave the building. In the event of either a lockout or lockdown, parents will not be able to sign-out children until the circumstances have been deemed safe. 
      • Please know that we continue to work in collaboration with our District Security and Nassau County Police Department in an effort to support the safety of all students and staff in our school community.

    It was wonderful meeting so many of our incoming 9th graders during the Student Orientation and Walkthrough this past Wednesday, August 30th. We began the orientation session in our cafetorium and introduced our building leadership team as well as faculty and staff who were present to support the orientation sessions.  During the presentation, we discussed the following topics with our students:

    As part of the presentation, students also had an opportunity to engage in a question and answer session with the Class of 2026 student government officers going into 10th grade this year.  The students were able to share some of their recommendations for a successful start to 9th grade as well as memorable experiences.  Some highlights included the importance of working hard, completing assignments and getting involved in activities, clubs and/or sports. We are genuinely grateful for their time, dedication and ongoing leadership.

    Following the presentation, students were provided with a map and the bell schedule to support them as they walked their tentative schedules throughout the building.  As students did so, they connected with faculty and staff who were in attendance.
